Finding our Roots
The history of Ahaspokuna is deeply connected to the history of Sri Lanka itself and it has indeed been an eventful past. Its roots are deeply entrenched in the history of the great Kandyan Kingdom in particular and the colonial invasions of the time, as well as the heroic resistance of the hill capital and its people against foreign invaders.
The highlights of this great history include the up country leaders signing a treaty in 1815 with the invaders and the subsequent breach of contract by the colonial masters, the 1818 Uva revolt by the key hill country leaders etc.
The founder’s great-great-grandfather, Abeykoon, the headman of Munwatta in the Hanguranketha area of Kandy, had to abandon his home and his village due to his rebellious past; leaving everything behind as a result of joining the Uva Wellassa revolt in 1817 against the British colonial rule. He was not alone though; a few other faithful families joined him in the bid for survival.
